On March 17, 2016, nursing mothers Emma Sullivan (left) and Karla Evans (right), led Animal Liberation Victoria‘s occupation of Dairy Australia national headquarters to stand up for the nearly half a million newborn cows killed by the dairy industry there each year. Emma had this to say: “I remember the overwhelming feeling when I first laid eyes on my little baby. It was an inseparable mix of anxious fear and joyful love, and a longing to protect her with all my life. When our journey of breastfeeding began, the bond between us grew stronger and stronger each day. It was then I made the connection that all mothers should…that we should respect the bond between mother and baby regardless of species. But the dairy industry destroys this bond for profit, throws babies away like wastage, murders day-old calves and steals their mothers’ breast milk to sell… it is like something from a horror movie. Now is the time to stand up and call for an end to this violence against mothers and babies.”
